The incumbent will conduct research on gene expression and metabolite profiles in sorghum plants with improved bioenergy conversion and increased resistance to stalk pathogens and drought. The incumbent is responsible for systematically identifying sorghum lines with increased resistance to fungal pathogens and drought, and identifying changes in expressed genes or metabolites as compared with pathogen susceptible or drought sensitive lines. The incumbent is responsible for determining the molecular mechanisms that affect fungal colonization of sorghum stalks under drought stress. The research will be conducted in cooperation with members of an interdisciplinary research team.

This position requires a Ph.D in plant pathology, plant biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field of study that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology and has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
The research assignment requires knowledge of bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, plant biology and microbiology. The incumbent must be skilled in RNA extraction and cDNA library construction for next-generation sequencing. In addition, the incumbent must be skilled in computational analysis of Next-generation sequencing data including the alignment of short sequencing reads to a genome, determining gene expression counts and differential gene expression analysis, along with other RNA-Seq related analyses. Skills in metabolite and small molecule analysis via HPLC and GCMS and familiarity with software program R are also desired.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
