Job Summary / Essential Duties:

  • Orients new participants and completes the initial assessment. Develops a plan of care with other staff members.

  • Supervises exercise sessions, monitoring participants for inappropriate responses to exercise. Completes blood pressure checks on participants pre and post exercise and watches for abnormal responses on the telemetry. Assesses participants pre, during and post exercise, making referrals and/or recommendations to the participant, other staff and Medical Director.

  • Reports any significant participant conditions immediately (dysrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure responses, change in status, etc.) to physician supervising the program. Initiates ACLS measures and/or emergency care according to hospital policy.

  • Charts and documents initial assessment and daily participant information and progress. Evaluates individual patient education needs by assessing risk factors, family dynamics, mood and motivation levels. Identifies behavior modification needs and lifestyle change needs and implements teaching plan and supportive steps to encourage the patient to change.

  • Leads participant education sessions in areas of nursing expertise.

  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings. Conducts an in-service for the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation professional staff once yearly.



At least two years of nursing experience required with one of those being in critical care nursing in order to have the skills needed to deal with patients in life-threatening situations.

Education and Licensure Required

Completion of a Registered Nurse program in an accredited institution

Current RN licensure for the state in which you live.

Additional requirements include:

BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level-with AED”, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Safety and Health Institute: ACLS, American College of Surgeons: ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and American College of Emergency Physician: ACLS

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Interpersonal skills necessary to gather and exchange information with physicians, patient, family and other hospital personnel, and teach patient and family pre-and post- rehabilitation care. Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement effective nursing care and problem-solving measures for patient’s physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being. Able to concentrate and pay attention to detail up to 60% of work time when monitoring participants during rehabilitation session and when documenting patients’ medical record.
