As a member of the extended reliability team within Cargill - Starches Sweeteners North America (SSNA), the Automation, Electrical, and Instrumentation (AEI) Specialist I – Automation Engineer interacts with internal and external centers of expertise to ensure reliability centered maintenance and engineering principles are utilized within the site and departments. This position is responsible for the execution of automation solutions in support of department requests, maintenance and capital projects primarily at the local site, but can also at times be utilized at other SSNA sites and will work as part of a centrally focused team implementing projects based on corporate defined best practice standards and guidelines. Provide design expertise in the areas of automation, electrical and instrumentation for initiatives and projects based on current best practices using approved components and standards. Must be fluent in at least one of the functional areas of Automation, Electrical or Instrumentation. Provide expertise and/or support for internal and external resources during the execution of projects.

45%Execution of automation solutions used for controlling plant process. Will involve design and configuration of control systems and oversight of electrical and instrumentation functions related to projects. Will be required to obtain knowledge of plant processes.

25%Design and implement control strategies based on current best practice standards and approved components.

20%Work with fix/support team to identify areas in need of improvement and reliability. Provide training for completed projects.

10% Training and development courses assigned by supervisor to meet positional requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering OR Associates degree in a technical discipline plus 3 years AEI related experience OR 5 years AEI related experience in lieu of degree.

  • Ability to configure and program a variety of control systems including DCS – Novatech D3, Emerson DeltaV; PLCs – Modicon, Allen Bradley and HMI systems.

  • Ability to update and troubleshoot a range AEI Systems: Data Historian OSI PI; Network Comunications – Modicon S908, Ethernet, Modbus , ModbusTCP, Profibus.

  • Design, implementation and troubleshooting of interlocks, permissives, forced setpoints, sequcencing and control strategies.

  • Design, implementation and troubleshooting of plant automation, low voltage electrical and instrumentation technologies.

  • Ability to read and update P&IDs, electrical schematics, loop diagrams, user required specifications, functional design specificaitons.

  • Understanding of continuous and batch process control strategies.

  • Understanding of motor control circuits and abilty to troubleshoot.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with minimum supervision and meet deliverables.

  • Ability to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, and cost.

  • Demonstrated strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Work well in a team or individual environment and be a self-starter.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP) Certification through Instrument Society of America (ISA).

  • Knowledge of root cause analysis, reliability centered maintenance, planning and scheduling.

  • Knowledge of predictive technologies (MCE, vibration, infrared, ultrasound, machinery lubrication).

  • Electrical Experience (e.g. 15KV distribution switchgear, transformers, breakers, motor control, UPS).

  • Instrumentation experience in pressure, level, flow, temperature, pH, O2, smart instruments).

  • Knowledge of predictive technologies (MCE, vibration, infrared, ultrasound, machinery lubrication).

  • Knowledge of IEC 61131 and other proprietary programming languages.

  • Design and implementation knowledge of plant networking technologies and topologies.

  • Experience with SSNA equipment and processes.

  • Basic understanding of National Electric Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, IEC standards and ISA standards.
